Is Substance Abuse Addiction a Choice?

The answer is yes and no. People don't really set out to become addicts. There is agreement in the medical community that addiction is a disease and many people are predisposed to it. Some may choose other vices like overeating, sex or porn addiction. There is an on-going debate on this topic with valid arguments on both sides of the issue.

Unfortunately, drug and alcohol addiction have self-destructive components of this disease because people will abuse substances regardless of the consequences. So, there may be genetic and psychological predispositions to abuse drugs and alcohol, but people do have the free will to make choices and decisions that impact their lives and those around them.

What Causes Overdose?

When people abuse substances on a long-term basis, they build up a tolerance for them. Eventually, they will require more and more of those substances to reach a desired effect. This is one of the trademarks of addiction itself. However, there is a point where the brain can only take so much of the substance before it becomes a toxin to the brain and body, and in the case of alcohol, a poison to the brain. The resulting effects of over-using substance is overdose. (An over-dosage of the substance.) Overdose can cause all kinds of negative effects to the body such as stroke, respiratory failure, seizures, heart attack, comatose symptoms and many others.

If a substance abuser has built up a tolerance of a substance and then they stop using for a period of time, the body will lose that tolerance. If they continue use at the same high level when they stopped, that can cause an overdose. Everyone has a different sensitivity to drugs and alcohol. A dosage that may be fine to one person, could cause another to overdose. This often happens with cocaine, heroin and meth use"”narcotics and can result in death.

Consider traveling for treatment when you enroll in rehab. Getting away from a toxic environment may be just the thing you need to kick start your recovery.

Recovery is a life-long ordeal, and you will confront many temptations and conditions that will make you want to relapse. One of the best ways to avoid these temptations is to join a weekly support group meeting for the affliction of your choice. Group meetings like AA help millions to overcome their addiction by introducing them to people like them where they can create a support group to lean on in hard times. You can also find a sponsor at group meetings who will help you on a personal level with your addiction. Additionally, 12-step programs can be a great aid to your.
