Addiction is nothing to be ashamed of. An important part of treatment is learning how addiction affects and rewires the brain. It can happen to anyone regardless of race or social class. Deciding to get help is a difficult step, however, it is a life-saving one.

How Does Alcohol Leave the Body?

According to the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (NCADD), when alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream, our liver breaks down 90% of it, the kidneys filter 5% of it in the urine, and our lungs exhale the remaining 5%. The rate that alcohol is metabolized (broken down) in the liver is at the rate of one standard drink per hour. Nothing can speed this up, including sleep or drinking coffee.

Is Substance Abuse Addiction Genetically Inherited?

Research from the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (NCADD) found that the risk for developing an addiction to alcohol and drugs does run in families. The study also reported that just because there may be a predisposition for children of alcohol or drug addicted parents, passed down genetically, it doesn't mean the kids will automatically develop an addiction. Not all children of parents who abuse substances will even use the same substances as their parents. Also, a genetic predisposition isn't necessary for addiction. People can develop dependency and addiction without any family history.

If you're struggling with an addiction, consider traveling to another city or state for your treatment. Getting away from it all can be an effective way to help your treatment be a success!
