The disease of addiction does not discriminate. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), forty people die each day from prescription drug abuse alone. Many people share the path of starting out on prescription pills then graduating to street drugs such as heroin. Those hardest hit in this country are the wealthy suburban areas. Money, prestige, and economic status does not ensure resistance to the disease of addiction; no one is immune.

Do Interventions Really Help?

With statistics coming from the National Institute of Health showing that one in ten American adults, age 12 or older, having some degree of a substance abuse disorder, it is not surprising to find that almost everyone these days at the very least knows someone who struggles with addiction. If you or someone you know is afflicted by chemical dependency, there is help available.

The best course of action is to educate yourself about the disease of addiction in order to help a loved one struggling. Denial and shame are strong allies of addiction and motivate people to continue to use. The cycle of abuse can be broken, but first something has to change. Staging an intervention can great benefit everyone involved by communicating concerns and helping to set new, healthy boundaries.

Often the person who is the subject of the intervention does seek treatment, however, if this is not the case it does not equal failure. As long as the conversation remains non-judgmental and non-derogatory and leaves the door open for future communication, it will be a success. The very act of staging an intervention introduces the idea of recovery and shows that you are concerned, but love and care for the person struggling with substance abuse.

No one is able to stay sober for a lifetime without other's help and support. Twelve Step programs have proven to be the most effective method of successfully treating the disease of addiction. Anyone struggling with substance abuse is strongly encouraged to find a meeting and attend regularly. Find a sponsor and start working the steps. Millions of people worldwide have struggled as you have and found relief and hope in the meetings of groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Living free of alcohol and drugs can be difficult at first, but worth everything it takes to obtain sobriety. The support and friendship found in the rooms of Twelve Step meetings are strong enough to allow the group to carry each other through even the most difficult of times. If you are struggling with substance abuse, find a meeting in your area and start living the life you were meant to have.
