Signs & Symptoms of Withdrawal

Pesky withdrawal symptoms are not fun to deal with. In some cases, they can even be life-threatening. But withdrawal symptoms should play no part in you refusing to get help. The most common withdrawal symptoms include: puking, sweating, shaking, trouble sleeping and loss of appetite. Some detox centers provide their clients with special medication to help with the pain and discomfort withdrawal symptoms cause. Everyone enters detox hooked to a different type of substance for a different length of time. So, not everyone will experience the same withdrawal symptoms. Do not go into detox with your outlook based upon other’s experiences. Everyone suffers from a different addiction.

Because withdrawal symptoms can be a handful to deal with, most professionals would recommend that you complete your detox program at an inpatient facility. Attending an inpatient facility will allow you to be under medical supervision around the clock. With a trained that you are safely and efficiently cleaning your body of harmful chemicals. Being under medical supervision can help ease your mind as you enter the detox process. If you know that a trained medical staff will be there to help you, your detoxification cycle does not have to be horrible.

Many people fall under the false impression that detoxing cold turkey at home is easier and quicker. They think that if they just strain themselves off of drugs and alcohol then they can save time and money before moving on to rehab. That is not true. Trying to lay off of drugs and alcohol via cold turkey techniques is dangerous and could result in deadly health side effects. Those who use cold turkey methods usually do not see good results. Detoxing on your own will only lead to worse experiences with withdrawal symptoms. Do not try to sober up cold turkey, seek professional medical help.

Types of Detox Medications

Valium (Diazepam) is a benzodiazepine that a medical professional will prescribe to help those who are withdrawing from alcohol addiction. Doctors will prescribe Buprenorphine to manage the symptoms of withdrawals as individual’s detox.

Holistic detoxification is detoxing without medical resources. Instead of medications, treatment centers will use more therapeutic exercises such as yoga, hiking, or meditation — exercises will naturally heal the body. The holistic approach to detox is to help a person withdrawal from drugs and/ or alcohol in a safe environment without the use of other medications or suppressants.

Naltrexone Detox

Naltrexone is a medication that blocks the effects of opioid drugs and alcohol. In the brain, the Naltrexone clears out the drugs that have attached themselves to the opioid receptors. It may reduce withdrawals and cravings as well as help prevent the desire to drink. Inpatient Detox Centers for Drugs and Alcohol

Inpatient detox centers require patients to live onsite at the rehab facility for the duration of treatment. With inpatient detox, clients receive 24/7 medical care and supervision, which lowers the risk for health complications associated with withdrawal. Inpatient care allows you or your loved one to focus fully on overcoming physical dependency on drugs and alcohol in a safe and controlled medical environment.

Inpatient detox is ideal for those who need to recover in quiet environments away from distractions and negative influences. It’s also ideal for those battling a severe addiction, and who require around-the-clock medical assistance to help them combat cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Many times, those who choose inpatient detox are able to withdraw from alcohol and substances much more quickly than those in outpatient detox programs since they are receiving 24/7 medical care. Medical professionals can instantly address and treat any complications that arise during inpatient detox.

Outpatient Detox Centers for Substance Abuse

Outpatient detox centers allow patients to live at home for the duration of their addiction treatment. Clients may visit treatment facilities daily, or as needed to receive medication for their addiction, and to attend counseling sessions and support groups aimed at addressing psychological causes of addiction. Outpatient detox can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on the severity of your addiction, your addiction type, and your motivation to achieve lasting sobriety.

Outpatient detox is generally recommended for those who struggle with a mild addiction, and who can recover safely at home away from drugs, alcohol and negative influences. Clients who must also balance work, school and family lives, can benefit from outpatient detox since they can schedule treatment sessions around these important obligations. Outpatient detox is suggested for those highly motivated to achieve long-term sobriety, since patients may frequently encounter triggers and temptations outside of rehab that increase the risk for relapse.

Many times, outpatient detox centers offer ongoing counseling, support groups and addiction education to keep patients on track with sobriety. Patients who receive ongoing medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction can benefit from outpatient detox, as well as patients overcoming addiction to prescription medications by using a tapering method. A top benefit to outpatient detox is having the ability to actively repair and rebuild your life while undergoing addiction treatment at the same time. Compared to inpatient detox, outpatient detox programs are generally less costly, and more affordable for many addiction clients and their families.

Going Through Medically-Assisted Detox

Medically-assisted detox often involves the use of prescription medications to help reduce or eliminate painful drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. For instance, sleep aids may be prescribed short-term to treat insomnia — a common drug and alcohol withdrawal symptom. Medically-assisted detox can make your recovery from addiction more comfortable and improve your chances of staying clean long-term. Many times, the unpleasant cravings and withdrawal symptoms caused when abruptly quitting drugs and alcohol can influence recovering addicts to relapse. Because their tolerance will have dropped during their attempt at sobriety, this increases the risk for an overdose, coma and death.

Opioid addiction is commonly treated using medically-assisted detox. Medications, such as methadone and buprenorphine, can satisfy your body’s craving for illicit opioids such as Heroin, without producing the same euphoric effects. This helps clients stop using Heroin and adjust to a healthier lifestyle without experiencing euphoria or withdrawal symptoms. Clients are less likely to relapse and return to Opioid use when cravings and withdrawal symptoms are eliminated.

Medically-assisted detox may also involve a detox method known as tapering — especially when clients are overcoming addiction to prescription drugs. Tapering is when your doctor gradually reduces your dosage over a period of time until you’re no longer physically dependent on the medication. This helps to prevent cravings and withdrawal symptoms that occur when quitting certain prescription drugs abruptly. While medically assisted detox can make withdrawal more comfortable, this detox method may not be fully effective at eliminating all withdrawal symptoms that occur when quitting certain drugs and substances. Enrolling in Luxury Detox Centers

Luxury detox centers allow clients to overcome addiction in beautiful, serene and luxurious settings with access to high-end amenities. Luxury detox centers may be located near calming beaches, in the quiet mountains, or in places that help patients feel relaxed and right at home throughout treatment. Fitness centers, saunas and private rooms are just some of the top-notch amenities available at luxury detox centers. Services such as daily housekeeping, gourmet meals, and security are also commonly available.

Addiction treatments available at luxury detox centers are similar to those offered at most inpatient detox centers. However, luxury detox centers typically offer more alternative and holistic therapies aimed at addressing the person’s whole health — not just symptoms of the addiction. For instance, yoga and exercise naturally eliminate drugs, alcohol, and other toxins from the body, while nutritional counseling teaches clients how to provide their bodies with the vitamins and nourishment needed after overcoming addiction. Acupuncture, daily massage therapy, and IV vitamin therapy are also effective at helping patients get through detox and withdrawal safely without the use of medications.

Following detox, clients at luxury detox centers can benefit from cognitive-behavioral therapy and counseling aimed at addressing underlying mental causes of addiction. There are 12-step support groups available to allow clients to bond with one another, and share useful tips and tricks for staying sober and avoiding relapse. Luxury detox centers are often more costly than traditional detox centers, but they can be affordable through health insurance plans, payment installment plans, and other payment options. Learn More

Rapid Detoxification from Drugs & Alcohol

Rapid detox is a method that allows you, or your loved one, to fully overcome physical dependency on alcohol and drugs in as little as 48 hours. Rapid detox helps you get over addiction as quickly as possible, so you can resume your life and make the positive changes you need to stay sober. Traditional detox methods can take up to two weeks or longer, depending on your addiction type and its severity. With rapid detox, you can avoid suffering cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and progress immediately to counseling and therapy to overcome the psychological causes of addiction.

During rapid detox, you’ll be given anesthesia so that you can remain unconscious throughout treatment. This helps you avoid the pain and discomfort associated with the drug and alcohol withdrawal process. While under sedation, you’ll receive intravenous medications that trigger the withdrawal process. For instance, those overcoming opioid addiction may be administered Buprenorphine and Naloxone for four-to-six hours until all traces of Opioids have been eliminated from the body. Following the detox process, patients may spend up to 48 hours in recovery until they’re ready to enter the next stage of addiction treatment.

Rapid drug detox is highly effective at helping patients overcome physical dependency on drugs and alcohol, but it must be paired with counseling and therapy to treat addiction as a whole. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps identify and overcome negative thoughts and behaviors that drive addiction, while behavioral counseling treats for co-occurring mental health disorders that cause addiction, such as bipolar disorder and depression. Rapid detox is ideal for those who are motivated to overcome addiction as quickly as possible. Learn More

Natural Detoxification from Drugs & Alcohol

Natural detox programs help you detox from substances naturally by using a series of healthy lifestyle practices intended to draw and eliminate toxins from your body. For instance, exercise therapy helps you purge alcohol and drugs from your body in the form of sweat and waste and regulate brain chemicals that have been altered on behalf of addiction. Nutrition counseling assists you to choose healthier foods that boost immune system function, and cleanse your body of impurities, while daily massage therapy is effective at releasing toxins stored in muscle and fat tissue.

Natural detox programs help patients establish new, structured daily routines that promote healthy living. Exercise and good nutrition will be built into your new lifestyle, and you will learn healthy ways to manage stress that don’t involve drugs or alcohol. You’ll also be taught how yoga and deep breathing can help you relax and avoid cravings, as well as how a good night’s sleep can naturally regulate depression and anxiety. By the time you complete natural detox, you’ll feel stronger, refreshed, more energetic, and ready to overcome underlying mental causes of addiction.

Natural drug detox is often recommended for those recovering from a mild or short-term addiction, and who may face mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. Patients who choose natural detox must be motivated, and prepared to overcome cravings and withdrawal symptoms without the use of drugs or medications. Those who have relapsed in the past after attempting other addiction treatments, or who are overcoming a long-term addiction, may want to consider the pros and cons of natural detox before choosing this type of program.
