When a town goes through a recession, people will naturally turn to drugs and alcohol to deal with unemployment. With this, comes the grave threat of drug addiction.

How Do People Get Addicted to Drugs?

People get addicted to drugs not because they are bad people, rather, because of a wide variety of issues. Generally, people get addicted to drugs because of a combination of social and genetic factors. People can have a predisposition for abuse, but not abuse if they experience trauma or isolation.

Addiction feeds on isolation, so people who don't have the requisite trauma or genetics can find themselves taken to drugs or alcohol because of a sense of isolation. As with the case in Lowell, Massachusetts people who lose their jobs often feel isolated and then use to cope.
