How Do I Help a Friend?
If someone you know is having a hard time with drugs or alcohol, then you might need to hold an intervention. An intervention is a gathering of family and friends to express concerns about a loved one’s actions toward drug and alcohol use. The point of an intervention is to get your loved one to realize that they have a problem and need help.
While most addicts and alcoholics are in denial about their problem, there are some who are just waiting for someone to say that they still care. An intervention can be a great way to prove that. Having those respected and liked by the addict show up to say they still care might work wonders.
In the intervention, take turns going around the room so that each person can speak. It would be a good idea, to ask everyone to prepare a written statement to read to your loved one. If your loved one feels they are being attacked, they will bottle up and not listen to anyone. Make sure the statements are nonjudgmental.
NA and AA meetings are great ways to build a strong support system. At these meetings you will connect with people who understand what you are going through because they have been through it themselves.
