How Do I Hold an Intervention?

Holding an intervention can be hard. Your loved one who has a substance abuse problem might not want to listen to you. Your goal should be to get your loved one into a rehab program so that they do not lose their life to drug and alcohol. You are not gathering people to criticize or judge your loved one. You are gathering to show concern and prove support.

Ask people who your loved one respect. These should be people who have seen the addict’s actions get out of control firsthand. Tell each person to prepare a written statement that they feel comfortable reading in front of everyone to your loved one. This will hopefully get your loved one to realize that their problem is taking a toll on everyone they care about. Not just them.

Addicts and alcoholics are usually in denial about their problem. And it could take them a long time to realize how bad their addiction is hurting them, mentally and physically. Holding an intervention might be able to help them see that sooner and get help. Because many people are in denial about substance abuse problems, it might take more than one intervention. It might also take more than one rehab stint.

Fighting back against your addiction will be a lifelong battle. You will need to take it one day at a time. Attending AA and NA meetings regularly are great ways to stay focused and motivated.
