Water is a sustaining, beautiful element but it has a dark side. Good and evil often congregate in the same things and that can be confusing. That’s the case with drugs and alcohol. They often have within them lots of positive characteristics—getting high or drunk are often exuberant experiences for people. Yet, there are several low points within each and they generally outweigh the moments of ecstasy—regardless of how high they are.

Getting high has its limits. The ups and downs of drug abuse can threaten any attempt at stability and seriously impair your relationship with friends and family. If you are at a point where the ups and downs are becoming too much for you to handle, then going to a recovery center may be your best option.

What is the Best Way to Start a Life in Sobriety?

There are lots of rumored ways to get help, but the most credible and successful ways involve detox in a rehab facility because for a lot of people trying to recover around all the triggers and enabling people is impossible.

In rehab you are removed from your comfort zone and given an opportunity to reconstruct your psyche. Drugs and alcohol create a lot of automatic behaviors that over time erode independence. You become dependent on a high, on your dealer and on others to enable you. It’s time to get yourself back.

Recovery may seem like it’s a drastic choice, but it’s important to realize that addiction is a disease of the mind and you might not have the power to do it on your own. You need the power of your peers and professionals. It’s important to have a strong support system when starting a new life in sobriety.

Many people find travelling for treatment to greatly benefit the recovery process. Choosing a treatment center that is away from potentially negative influences can help ensure completion of the rehab program.

It’s important to balance out and realize that the highs aren’t worth the lows, that you are worthy of yourself unhindered by drugs and alcohol.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance abuse, reach out. Give us a call at (866) 578-7471 .

Getting through a treatment program is a great accomplishment. Regular meeting attendance is a great way to ensure that all your hard work does not go to waste. 12-step programs are the best way to combat the disease of addiction. Everyone is encouraged to get a sponsor, work the 12-steps and attend meetings regularly. The support and guidance you find within a 12-step program will allow you to overcome all obstacles that life throws your way. If you are struggling with substance abuse, find a meeting in your area and start living the life you were meant to live.
