Saginaw, Michigan is Waiting for Help

Saginaw is in the Tri-Cities area of Michigan. It is a part of the county with the same name, Saginaw County, which it tough to get its name from Ojibwe language meaning "where the Sauk were" possibly in reference to the Sauk tribe who once lived there.

Saginaw county is called home by just about 196,000 people. With increasing unemployment and crimes rates, it can make it easy to see that Saginaw suffers from drug addiction and alcoholism just like any other city. The disease of addiction can cast its shadow over anyone at any time and ruin their life faster than they can handle it.

Many addicts and alcoholics start out using dangerous substances to relieve stress in their life. But after constant use of drugs like cocaine, heroin or alcohol the user can become physically and mentally dependent on these substances to feel normal. Then before you know, they are taking them on an hourly basis, spending all of their time and money on it and putting it before their relationships with loved ones.

How Do I Help a Loved One?

If someone close to you is stuck in the haze of an addiction, then you might have to plan an intervention in order to save their life. An intervention is a gathering of friends and family who come together to express concern over a loved one's addiction or alcoholism problems. Everyone who attends should be close with the addict and have seen, first hand, how out of control their substance abuse problem has become.

In an intervention, each person will take a turn reading a prepared statement to the addict letting them that even though they are disappointed, they are more scared that the addict can get seriously hurt, or even die. Express your concerns in a nonjudgmental way, if the addict feels that they are being attacked, then the intervention might be a wasted effort because they will bottle up and reject any comments made.

The overall goal of your intervention should be to convince your loved on to get the help they need. Learning how to handle an addiction is tough and requires professional help. Let them know that everyone who has gathered wants to see them make a comeback before they kill themselves.

There are plenty of meetings at different times and on different days, if you aren't as comfortable in one of them you  can try a different one. The important part is finding a meeting where you can openly talk about any struggles you're having and learn new tools or reestablish the tools you've already learned. The best way to build a strong, go-to support group is to attend AA and NA meetings on a daily basis and connect with people who know exactly what you are going through.
