Is Drug and Alcohol Addiction a Choice?

The answer to this is debatable depending on who you ask. It is a choice to use whenever someone "œchooses" to use a substance. However, addiction itself may or may not be a choice. Many people are predisposed to addiction as a mental and behavioral disorder, while some are predisposed to it through genetics. Parents who are addicts often pass down addiction to their children through their genes.

Even when people aren't predisposed to it by genetics, they can still become addiction through repeated use of substances. One of the main complications with addiction is that once a person becomes addicted, their brain is actually re-wired, reprogrammed ina way, to "œmake" the person continue their addiction. Their brain programming puts substance abuse above everything else in priority, including eating and sleeping. And when a person stops using, their body compels them to keep using through painful withdrawals.

For those who have a psychological predisposition to addiction, just because they aren't addicted to drugs or alcohol, they may choose another means for that outlet, including gambling, sex, porn, video games, etc. Substance abusers can feel that they have no free will in stopping their use, and that's the benefit of rehab, to help them reprogram their minds and behaviors.

If you're suffering with substance abuse, consider traveling to another city or state for treatment for your disease. Traveling for treatment gets you away from stressful conditions, people and other things that may lead you to use.
