Should I Travel for Treatment?
Traveling for treatment is probably the best option they have. Getting away for a few weeks or months so that you can focus on yourself can give you the separation you need from the people and situations which may have contributed to your drinking and using in the first place.Traveling away from home for treatment also gives an extra layer of anonymity. Find a treatment facility located in another state and relax knowing that you can spend all your energy on recovery and that none will go toward worry. While many people benefit greatly from traveling for treatment, others may prefer a facility close to home. Proximity to loved ones can be a huge benefit if everyone is supportive and promotes recovery.Should I Stage an Intervention?
Despite the beautiful scenery, art, and culture that abounds in the state, New Mexico holds second place in the nation for drug-related fatalities. If you have a friend or loved one whose life is becoming out of control because of a drug or alcohol addiction, act now. Do not wait for him or her to become a statistic. Call (866) 578-7471 today and ask to speak to a professional interventionist. When planned with love and support, an intervention can be the difference between life and death for your loved one. Remember that he or she is struggling through what may prove to be the hardest time in his or her life right now, and that your love and support will be critical in getting through this period. It is uncommon for someone to recover from addiction without a push in that direction. Help your loved one see that help is needed and available by staging an intervention today.Living Your Recovery
Where there is a significant problem with drug and alcohol abuse, often there is also a strong community of recovery. Regardless of where you live or where you went to treatment, a strong sober support group is essential.Finding a group that deals with one’s addiction and forming a social circle of supportive friendships will go a long way in helping a person stay true to their recovery. In times of dire need, however, it’s also important to have a list of emergency contacts. When temptation is particularly strong, having someone you can call for help can make all the difference in the world.Life in recovery is infinitely better than a life spent using. Sober people are fun-loving and inviting people who love adventure and activities. There is never a shortage of community fun for those involved in a sober community.Treatment Options in New Mexico
At first, the unusual dopamine levels caused by drugs and alcohol temporarily alters your brain function. Continual use tells the brain that this high is a new normal and the brain adjusts dopamine levels in a way that can accommodate these substances permanently. One of the most dangerous and frightening drugs on the street today is Phencyclidine, aka PCP or Angel Dust.According to DAWN, Drug Abuse Warning Network, emergency room visits due to the drug PCP rose by over 400 percent between 2005 and 2011. For users aged 25 to 34, the increase was even greater, estimated at 500 percent. These statistics are certainly alarming. This report “is a wake-up call that this dangerous drug may be making a comeback in communities throughout the nation,” stating Dr. Peter Delany with the Center for Behavioral Health Statistic and Quality at SAMSHA.Part of its comeback may be due to its reputation. The near legendary reputation for creating superhuman abilities like strength and speed cause the line between fact and fiction to be blurred when talking regarding the drug’s effects. The many stories of people picking cars right off the ground, challenging police and generally be capable of feats usually reserved for characters in comic books plague the PCP folklore.Attention grabbing, certainly, however are these stories true and what does happen to a person using PCP?Drug History
The discovery of PCP was accidental. A chemist, Victor Maddox, was researching synthetic analgesics and such compounds and stumbled across the synthesis of PCP. It was thought to hold promising prospects as a painkiller and thus quickly pushed through production.By the 1950s, it hit the market as a long-acting experimental drug named Sernyl. It was short-lived, however. Severe side effects such as delirium, hallucinations, mania and disorientation caused it to be pulled off the market by 1965.Recreationally, PCP increased in popularity between 1970 and 1980. With the commonality of usage increasing, society looked for a way to stop its gain. Media advertised the extreme potential dangers of the drug and effectively brought about dramatic decrease in the number of users.Recently, however, PCP has begun to return to its former popularity. Some experts explain this trend by pointing fingers at a young generation, which was brought up without proper education regarding the dangers of this drug.Harmful Side Effects
The reality of what happens to PCP users is much less fantastical than the myths surrounding it. The drug effects are extremely varied and in no way predictable.Behavioral and physical effects include such symptoms as poor coordination, numbness in extremities, nausea, loss of balance, slurred speech, a fixed stare, excessive sweating and irregular rapid eye movements. In higher doses, it may also cause convulsions, analgesia, anesthesia, and death.Psychologically, PCP causes numerous effects, including rage, ego death, paranoia, depersonalization, suicidal tendencies, hallucinations, euphoria, aggression and severe perception changes. Each person is completely different in terms of PCP’s effect on mood. While some people experience false feelings of being invincible, exorbitant strength and mental numbness, others experience detachment.PCP never turns a person into superman. Energy and animation may be experienced by an individual using PCP, however abnormal strength is not something it can create. However, its hallucinatory effects may cause the delusion of power and strength, but it’s just that, a hallucination.Much debate revolves around PCP and aggression. Some users have become exceedingly violent while on the drug and whether the person was previously or simply prone to aggression is still unknown. There is not enough reliable data to support any hypothesis regarding the issue.Truth and Consequences
Not surprisingly, usage of this drug comes with great risk. Extreme bodily harm is not uncommon due to the delusional mental state and poorly made decisions.Addiction to PCP is swift. It is a powerful drug that creates a tsunami like neurological effect, which can cause full blown addiction with the first use. Some people experience addiction to the drug at a slower pace, however, it seems everyone who uses this drug has difficulty quitting. For those who use PCP long term, the consequences include just about every known health problem. Cognitive problems include brain lesions, brain damage, problems or inability to speak, schizophrenia-like symptoms and difficulty thinking. In addition, the psychotic state induced by the drug can become permanent in cases of long-term use.American Horror Story
It’s hard to imagine someone understanding all of this about PCP and still picking up the drug. It seems unimaginable to use this drug, for even active drug users, but especially for those exposed to the drug warnings publicized by the media a few decades ago.It seems that with the success of the anti-drug campaign followed a cessation of warnings that would have benefited a whole new generation.“PCP is a potentially deadly drug and can have devastating consequences not only for individuals but also for friends, families and communities. We must take steps at every level to combat the spread of this public health threat,” said Dr. Peter Delany of SAMSHA.We need to hurry as may be already be witnessing the newfound popularity of PCP and the beginning of yet another phase of this drug’s influence.New Mexico & Drug Abuse
In 2010, New Mexico had the second highest drug overdose death in the country, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The following year, drug overdose threats increased by 66.3 percent, which is an alarming rate. You do not have to necessarily be a drug addict to die from a drug overdose. Any time you abuse any number of drugs, you run the risks of dying. New Mexico is seeing huge rises in drug abuse numbers in heroin, meth, prescription drugs and cocaine. Many people who abuse harmful substances or prescription drugs for non-medical reasons develop chemical dependencies to these drugs. Constant drug use can be extremely dangerous for one’s health.New Mexico & AlcoholismIn a local news column, Laura Tomedi, an alcohol epidemiologist for the New Mexico Department of Health was quoted saying New Mexico has had the highest alcohol-related death rate since 1997. These high alcohol abuse numbers do not look like they will go down any time soon.People have a hard time recognizing alcoholism in themselves or others because alcohol is so widely accepted. Binge drinking on weekends with friends can lead to much harsher realities than you might realize. Alcohol is a drug that can be addictive.Like any other addiction, alcoholism can lead to serious health and legal consequences at the bare minimum and death at the maximum.
