About this Facility
Unique Ladies of Character (ULOC) is a nonprofit, faith-based organization located in Tampa, Florida, that has been serving women in need since 2003. Situated near Florida’s beautiful beaches, ULOC provides transitional housing and supportive services for women transitioning from prison, jail, drug treatment programs, and homelessness. In addition, we offer referrals for residential drug and alcohol treatment through partnerships with licensed professionals who are experienced in diagnosing and treating addiction as well as co-occurring mental health disorders.Founded by Executive Director Samantha Brown, ULOC is the fulfillment of her lifelong vision to create a continuum of care that empowers women to break free from the cycle of substance abuse and discover a healthier way of life. Our mission is to provide guidance, education, and opportunity to those struggling with addiction, helping them make positive life changes and become responsible, productive members of society. At ULOC, we recognize that addiction is often rooted not only in substance misuse but also in deeper challenges such as lack of direction, motivation, or emotional well-being. That’s why our programs focus on the whole person—addressing the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of recovery in an authentic, supportive, and structured environment. We offer transitional housing where women can live safely while gaining access to treatment, accountability, and the tools needed for long-term success. We are especially committed to serving vulnerable populations, including female veterans, who may be self-medicating with drugs or alcohol as a way of coping with trauma or life challenges. For women without insurance, ULOC provides affordable alternatives, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent anyone from receiving the help they need. Our goal is simple yet powerful: to not only remove substances from the equation but also to add the ingredients of passion, purpose, and healthy living so that women can heal, grow, and thrive in sobriety.

Owner,Mrs. Brown,is a viscious, cruel &greedy dictator. According to the rules of living in the group home one is allowed three infractions before one will be asked to leave, unless it involves serious serious danger, etc (like a fire or something). She did not allow me to view the premises before I signed a contract to move in, and told me if I did not sign on the spot I would have to wait till the next day for a tour before signing.
I committed the first infraction of breaking curfew by an hour and she determined it as a warning. Then I had a 1-hour lateness again two days later and she stated that since I had committed two infractions and that I was not following the rules properly I could not come back i. She did not give me any details on which other rules I was breaking. I can only imagine that the day before the house mother had a migraine and she wanted quiet and darkness through the house and I did not know her mental or health status when I walked in and I turned on the light and I was on the phone with someone and I laughed and she said that that woke her up and that she hated that laugh. I also opened the wrong frigerator freezer door that is only used by certain residents. The reason why I had it open was because I was getting ice cube trays with water and she yelled at me about the freezer door being opened. Also I ate food from the refrigerators and I did not know that they belong to residents. It was not explained to me that I had to buy my own food or get my own food to use those refrigerators. A resident had told me that the food was for everyone but she was lying to trap me. And lastly my brother came by waiting to pick me up and he Parts in the driveway and when the assistant owner came by she scolded him that he was only allowed to be in the driveway waiting for me the first night only to drop off my things so he waited down the block across the street at a parking lot and was told never to come near the house again.
At the pantry there was a trap house right across the street for using, buying & selling drugs. The girls who live there come home high from smoking pot and drunk. Without any repercussions
Anyway, those are the only things that I could imagine that annoyed them that I did.i could not come back to the group home to get even any food and I had no food to eat so she left me hungry out in the rain. She told me to go stay at my brother's, but he is homeless too. My back had gotten soar working at the pantry earlier in the day this past Saturday Aug. 26th, 2017 as is required of new girls during their first 30 days only, every Saturday. She did not let me pick up my food that night from the house that I had earned in the hot sun with back pain. She said that if I returned to pick up the food I would have to take all of my things and leave immediately with no warning whatsoever at 9 at night without any extra clothing, toiletries and only 1 pair of shoes left on feet, no food.
When I came to get my belongings the next day Sunday 8/27/17, including the food, I came in with police escort to avoid Mindy, the house mother, and the other girls heckling me. They had already gone through all of my things. They stole my sneakers, my slippers, a telephone that I had and one other item that was under my bed that was allowable (cigarettes). They did not let me look for my personal belongings myself because the housemother Mindy stated that there were other people in the room now& I could not enter into it anymore. She allowed them to steal from me.

Unique Ladies of Character lives up to its name. The staff and community encourage women to embrace their strength and potential while working on sobriety and self-discovery. I’m grateful for the friendships, skills, and hope I gained through this program.

This organization creates a safe and empowering environment for women in recovery. The peer support and structure helped me stay accountable while learning new life skills. I wish there were more weekend activities, but overall, it was a positive and life-changing experience.

Unique Ladies of Character is truly inspiring. The program provides women with the tools, guidance, and confidence to rebuild their lives while focusing on recovery and personal growth. I felt supported every step of the way and left with a stronger sense of who I am and where I’m going.
