During my years in Portland, in and out of my active heroin addiction, I did the full tour of nearly every detox facility in the area. Because I had insurance, I was able to go to some some of the more ‘upscale’ places. While Hooper has a certain image, due to its admirable and much needed policies aiming to open their doors to ALL who seek treatment, insurance and money or not. But I always rated Hooper as the best detox I had ever been to. Even though I ended up having 9 separate stays at Hooper, their caring staff, many of whom had been there for years before I came around, always made me feel welcome, valued, and good about my decision to try again. That right there can be all important when it takes an addict countless tries before achieving long term sobriety. All those previous tries were not wasted attempts, you build up your knowledge and strength bit by bit, sometimes. Being treated with respect along the way means everything. I now have been clean for over ten years. I know that I learned a lot during my stays at Hooper, and will be forever grateful for them.
