Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is an antidepressant Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SSNRI) used to treat severe depression and anxiety, as well as fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). Like all SSNRIs, Cymbalta inhibits serotonin (a neurotransmitter most commonly known as the “feel-good” chemical) and norepinephrine (related to stress response) reabsorption in the brain, which allows for more free-flowing serotonin and norepinephrine to be available. Though Cymbalta isn’t physically addictive, its positive psychological effects, as well as negative psychological withdrawals, make it psychologically addictive.
