About this Facility
The Addiction Institute of New York's Halfway House is located just off Riverside Drive in a quiet, residential neighborhood on the upper west side of Manhattan. It is more of a temporary home than a treatment facility to the 24 uniquely diverse residents. Residents stay for a period of three to six months while pursuing housing as well as vocational, educational, and continued recovery plans. Our goal is to assist the individual in becoming a drug-free, productive member of society.A six-story brownstone, complete with dining room, library, television room, music room, private bedrooms, and community room, the Halfway House provides all the amenities of home in a safe, sober, drug-free, and supportive environment.Daily chores are an integral part of the program in the Halfway House. These tasks help to instill structure and responsibility back in the lives of our residents. Socialization skills development is fostered through recreation activities, teamwork and informal discussion groups held in the lounge during evening hours. Regular community meetings help resolve community problems and help develop problem-solving skills. Shortly after admission, new residents begin treatment in our Outpatient Department. In addition to group therapy, individual counseling and self-help groups, our very highly regarded Vocational Rehabilitation Department immediately begins an assessment process that may lead to on-site General Equivalency Diploma classes, preparation for college, vocational training, or return to employment. Medical, and if necessary, psychiatric services are provided. In addition to having a counselor in the Outpatient Department, we also provide a counselor in the Halfway House. Support staff is available in the house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

don’t do it this place is like a prison basically you spend all day in your room for one hour a day you go to therapy or on the computer if the Wi-Fi is working and then you get to work in the kitchen like a slave and be treated like shit by someone named Jenelle yes you Janelle how dare you be so disrespectful you have serious issues. also you get to clean up the after the staff and that includes their bathrooms who the hell are you to tell me to clean your toilet that’s disgusting clean it yourself. If you want to get sober go somewhere else find a family or friends stay with even stay in a homeless shelter it’s better than going to this hell hole

I would like to know the requirements to move into sober living. I've been doing good with staying sober but slipped while visiting NYC Fri. I'm currently recovering in a hospital close by your location. My plan was to relocate to NYC from Atlanta. My background is in Office Operations and the Performing Arts and Web Design.

Location, insurance, assignments, nightly 12 step meetings in-house was nice. All on partial floor of hospital, no recreation, no creative activities, no guidance/opinion of 12 step. The aftercare placement was good --> placed me in halfway house. Took Medicaid (temp gov. Assistance ), 1 on 1 counseling through but not incisive. No 'lighthouse' of brilliance.

MY OVERALL TREATMENT WHILE THERE WAS FULLY EFFECTIVE. AS YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW, SOBRIETY AND RECOVERY IS THERE FOR THE PEOPLE THAT TRULY WANT IT... AND I DID. MY RECREATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL 'RESEARCH' WAS OVER.ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I LEFT THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM IS BECAUSE IT WAS 'THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY' WHICH IS IMMENSLY DIFFERENT FROM A 28 DAY PROGRAM. ADDITIONALLY, I LEFT BECAUSE I NO LONGER FELT SAFE AS A GAY MAN. ALSO BECAUSE MY SUPPORT FROM THE COUNSELORS BEGAN TO GET CONTENTIOUS. I BELIEVE THIS WAS BECAUSE I CARRIED MYSELF DIFFERENTLY THAN MY CO-DRUG SOBER ADDICTS (WHICH OFTEN HAPPENS) AND ONCE IT CAME TO LIGHT THAT I HAD BEEN TO COLLEGE, IT SEALED THE DEAL. ONE OF MY COUNSELORS IN MY CONVERSATION ABOUT NO LONGER FEELING SAFE, AMONGST OTHER THINGS HE SAID TO ME THAT BECAUSE I HAD A LITTLE BIT OF COLLEGE AND I SPOKE WELL, I HAD A 'BETTER THAN ATTITUDE' TO WHICH I REPLIED THAT THIS WAS NOT TRUE BECAUSE I RECOGNIZED THAT I WAS AN ADDICT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THERE AND MY WILLINGNESS TO DO THE PROGRAM WAS MY GOAL. AFTER FURTHER UNINSPIRING DIALOGUE, I DECIDED TO LEAVE THAT NIGHT WITH THE 1 TOKEN THAT THEY GAVE ME, MUCH TO THE CONCERN OF THE PEOPLE I HAD GOTTEN TO KNOW WHILE THERE, TRYING TO ENCOURAGE ME NOT TO LEAVE BECAUSE I WOULDN'T STAY SOBER. I TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD AND NEVER COME BACK THERE. I STAYED SOBER UNTIL I GOT A BED AT SMITHERS. MY SOBRIETY DATE WAS NOVEMBER 7TH 1990. I HAVE BEEN SOBER EVER SINCE THEN...23YRS FOR WHICH I WILL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
