How Can I Reach Someone with an Addiction?

Seeing a loved one wake up sick with an addiction every day can be hard. It may hurt your feelings and scare you when they put their drugs and alcohol before you and others. Some addicts do not realize that their problem has gotten out of hand. The ones who do know they have a problem might not know that their loved ones will support them, because they are embarrassed. If you need to reach a loved one so that they get help, then hold an intervention.

An intervention can be a great way to provide your loved one with the wakeup call they need to get professional help for their substance abuse problem. Gathering friends and family to express concern and support to your loved one might make them want to change their situation.

Go around the room and take turns reading prepared statement to the addict about how their actions have affected each person. This might make the addict open their eyes to realize that their substance abuse problem takes on a toll on more than just them.

The main goal of the intervention should be to get the addict to agree to go to rehab. Make sure you use specific examples of how your loved one's action have hurt themselves and everybody else. Your loved one needs to know that if they decide to get help, that the people close to them will support their decision.

When you are in recovery it is a good idea to surround yourself and make friends with other people who are also trying to remain sober. You can connect with other people in recovery by attending AA and NA meetings. These meetings are held daily in almost every city.
