The Future of LSD

LSD, the drug of the hippie generation, has become a substance for research and further understanding of the mind. The substance has long been understood to create spiritual experiences, an altered state of consciousness and sensations of universal belonging. Though the effect has been known, how it creates such an effect on people has been shrouded in folklore and mystery.

A study conducted recently has illuminated scientists to LSD’s impact on the brain. The results are astonishing. The Imperial College London conducted this new study, which was aimed at quantifying the drug’s effect and gaining an understanding of both consciousness and the drug.

Drug History

Lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, was first synthesized in Switzerland in the second half of the 1930s. A hallucinogen, it was originally thought to be useful for the treatment of psychiatric conditions. However, the powerful effects prompted many western countries to outlaw the drug within three decades of its discovery.

The drug was a central figure in the American counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s. The hippie generation brought this drug to the attention of people around the world through the music and art they created. The sensation of expanded consciousness gave LSD a reputation as transcendental and mystical.

The hippies were not the only ones to believe that LSD has mind-expanding capabilities. It has been the central figure in some highly publicized illegal projects aimed at mind control and an attempt to study the effect on behavior and perspective. MKUltra, the CIA’s project, was the most famous of these.

Results of the New Study

The world has waited 50 years to see the results of this new study. The scientific inquiry into LSD’s neural effects was halted due to the government’s ban on the drug, until now. The method of study entailed administering LSD via an IV and recording the drug’s effect using three different brain scanning techniques. The results are colorful images reminiscent of psychedelic art. A lack of segmentation is perhaps the first thing one notices. On LSD, the entire brain becomes brightly lit consistently throughout.

Normally, the brain shows intermittent bright spots that are appropriately spaced. The norm is what was seen in images of the effects of the placebo – local activity only, with results not at all similar to the actual drug.

“We saw many more areas of the brain than normal were contributing to visual processing under LSD, even though volunteers’ eyes were closed,” said Robin Carhart-Harris, one of the project researchers.

In effect, subjects were “seeing with their eyes shut,” he further noted. Their imagination was the source of all that they were seeing and experiencing.

The brains of the volunteers seemed to be working harmoniously as one. The different regions of the brain, which are normally active one at a time like keys on a piano, were lit all at once. This indicates a substantial change from the normal neural processing patterns. It also explains, perhaps, why LSD is commonly associated with feelings of belonging and unity.

The whole brain working at once seems to create the spiritual experience that drive many to use LSD.

Possibilities for Treatment

“We are finally unveiling the brain mechanisms underlying the potential of LSD, not only to heal, but also to deepen our understanding of consciousness itself,” remarked Amanda Feilding of the Beckley Foundation, a contributor to the study.

The powerful nature of LSD has been recorded in technicolor and its potential as a psychiatric treatment highlighted. The study has brought the drug back to the table as a treatment option for a variety of illnesses including depression, addiction and anxiety.

Some of the most common and devastating mental illnesses are characterized by entrenchment of thoughts and behaviors so compelling that modification isn’t always feasible. Even where possible, the time and money necessary makes effective treatment out of many people’s reach.

In cases of depression, the deeply engrained thought processes may take years to redirect, while in the meantime the sufferer is left nonfunctional and hurting. The same is true for addiction and many other mental disorders.

LSD has the potential to uproot and smooth over a lifetime worth of unhealthy thought processes, behaviors and conditioning. These roads blocks to typical treatment protocols are easily broken through with LSD’s neural tsunami effect.

With old, destructive thought processes uprooted, with the aid of therapy and behavior modification any individual could potentially get a new lease on life.

Moving Forward

The study is just the first of many steps, however, science is moving toward realizing LSD’s potential therapeutic value. Still some ways from the original founders’ goal for the drug, but we are getting closer.

This breakthrough study brought LSD back into the conversation of viable options for the treatment of addiction and other mental disorders. For those whom all other treatments have failed, this is a godsend. LSD may very well be an option for those who have exhausted all other forms of treatment.
