My son was hosted here on two separate occasions, and he was happy and had nothing but great things to say about the staff. As a mental health professional myself, I understand the levels of confidentiality, and I respect the fact they are steadfast in maintaining that; however, I believe their approach has to change, and instead of just saying, " I can't deny or confirm," they could engage on a brief dialog with the people on the other side of the phone while still maintaining the confidentiality of their clients, without being dry and hanging up a call after they say I can't deny or confirm something. Some training on how to engage in a professional dialog with the families calling them or educating the staff on how to engage in a brief conversation without breaching confidentiality is necessary.
I can see the situation from two different lenses, the professional and the parental. I am sure a nervous parent can be at ease if the staff says something like, "I can't deny or confirm what you are inquiring, and I can only imagine how difficult this time might be for your family but be patient and kind to yourself and perhaps your son/daughter will contact you to provide all the information that you need. Be strong, Mom/dad/Uncle, etc... and then they can hang up!!
Pathways staff needs to remember that their guests or clients have family that cares for them, and they are worried.
