Being accused of Driving Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs is called many names throughout the country, such as:
- DUI: Driving Under the Influence;
- DWI: Driving While Intoxicated (or Impaired);
- DWAI: Driving While Ability Impaired;
- OUI: Operating Under the Influence;
- OVI or OVWI: Operating a Vehicle While Impaired;
- OWI: Operating While Intoxicated;
- OWVI: Operating a Vehicle While Visibly Impaired;
- DWUI: Driving While Under The Influence.
For the purposes of this website, driving under the influence, intoxicated or impaired will be referred to as a DUI.
Whatever the acronym used, Driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs, other controlled substances, or any other substance that impairs your ability to safely operate a vehicle is a crime.
When pulled over for a DUI, while you do have rights, the way some States DUI laws are written, exercising some of these rights will have adverse consequences. In some States, while you have a right to refuse a Breathalyzer test, if you do refuse a Breathalyzer test it triggers and automatic suspension of your drivers license pending the outcome of your DUI Defense Case.
In addition to fines and penalties handed down in court, a DUI conviction may also have significant consequences in your everyday life. A DUI conviction may result in the convicted party to not be able to work in specific occupations that involved driving or the transportation of others. Having your license suspended may be a significant hindrance in getting to and from work, going to the grocery store, or attending other professional, personal, or social events. You may also be ordered to attend various mandatory programs or classes that are paid for by the convicted party.
If you have been arrested for a DUI Offense, it may be extremely important to seek the legal advice and representation of experienced legal counsel.
